The remains of Jim Loomis reside in an unmarked grave at the Old Auburn Cemetery. The Loomis Basin Historical Society is raising funds for a memorial stone to mark his resting place. Our goal is $3,000.

Born in Michigan in 1830, Jim Loomis came to the Loomis Basin in 1852. With the arrival of the railroad in 1864, he trained as assistant agent at Pino Station and soon took over as station agent, a position he held for twenty years. In 1884, the Central Pacific Railroad Company renamed the depot "Loomis" in his honor. Jim Loomis served as Pino postmaster from 1869 to 1886. The post office was renamed "Loomis" in 1890. Jim also was the town's express agent, storekeeper, saloonkeeper and butcher. At one time, it is said, "he was the entire town."
This project to mark the grave of James Oscar Loomis is in partnership with the Placer County Historical Society, the Placer County Historical Foundation, and Dr. Richard B. Loomis.

LBHS worked with the Loomis Basin Chamber of Commerce to create the Loomis Legacy Loop walking tour.
LBHS retells stories of our past with Throwback Thursday, published each week on Facebook by the Loomis Library & Community Learning Center.
LBHS is a stop on the Heritage Trail each summer with a unique "pop-up museum," presented in cooperation with the Placer County Department of Museums.
LBHS provides a local history reference collection at the Loomis Library, in partnership with the Placer County Genealogical Society.
